March 20, 1927: “very much depressed”

Sunday the twentieth
Very pleasant in the morning. Audrea seemed better so they all went to Salem. About four o’clock it began to snow quite heavily + than it hailed + finally rained hard. They got home a little after ten I am afriad Audrea got more cold. All very much depressed. I don’t feel at all well.

February 20, 1927: “so that’s over”

Sunday the twenteh
storm continued with a high wind. They could not go to Salem + poor Lu was much disappointed. Hope they can go next Sunday. Mrs. Baldwin managed to get in to tell us that Ramona’s baby was born at twenty minutes to three this a.m. A little girl named Marilyn Virginia Waite so that’s over.

February 13, 1927: “will grow like a dream”

Feb. Sunday the thirteenth
The first pleasant Sunday for ever so long the family all went down to Salem. found them ver much depressed. They are just beginning to realize what has happened to them. I will be that for a long time + gradually Mattie will grow like a dream to them. They will never forget her but they will learn to think of her without tears

February 6, 1927: “those who are most needed”

Sun. 6th
Edith + Clarence went to Salem. Dull + threating rain. Snowed in the night + the ground is white. Audrea + I had a nice quiet day. Audrea very good + thoughtful. Folks got home about ten o’clock. Edith brought home Mrs. Parkers coat. Fred was very thoughtful to give it to her. She needed it. She took down some things in the line of food. poor Lu cant cook much. It does seem as if it was those who are most needed who are taken. Did not storm after all. found the family somewhat more cheerful. Tho’ they have been wonderful considering what a great loss they have had. Mattie was a wonderful woman

January 31, 1927: “swollen past recognition”

Monday thirty first
A beautiful day but very windy. Edith came home a wreck. her face swollen past recognition with crying. It was harder than even the day of the funeral, for on that day there was a great deal of excitement, so many people + so much to do, but now they are all alone + realize more what has happened. I am afraid Edith will be sick if this keeps up long. Edith’s head troubles her so.
