May 15, 1927: “sudden death of a friend of the family”

Sunday the 15th. Cold + dull. It rained very hard in the morning. It is Mrs. Parker’s birthday + they were all coming up here but on account of the sudden death of a friend of the family could not do so we went for a short ride after 4 o’clock + got caught in a thunder shower. It rained every day last week + rained hard too. + also this week.

March 21, 1927: “too dangerous”

Monday the twenty first
Rained all night hard + has rained all day. Some snow on the ground yet so it must have snowed more than we realized. Audrea did not go to school. too dangerous she is beginning to hack a little I do hope + trust she is not going to have a cough. No one came in. Read in “Just George” + went to bed.

March 3, 1927: “sidetracked”

Thursday the third
This was to have been a wild day of snow + sleet, but the storm was side tracked somewhere + it is quite pleasant only a very high wind, which is bad for Audrea. Feeling very well, for me. Edith went out in the car to get a number of things we wanted, + came back without them which is not unusual. Had a late dinner + a short evening. read aloud + went to bed

March 1, 1927: “my head must be made of wood”

Tuesday March the first 1927
A most beautiful day. March is certainly coming in like a lamb + will most likely go out like a lion, but it brings us that much nearer to April which is a consummation devoutly to be wished. How I dislike the snow. It seems as if I could not wait to get out in the car. I wonder how I live. No one to speak to + nothing pleasant ever happens. My head must be made of wood or I’d go crazy. Read aloud + went to bed.

February 6, 1927: “those who are most needed”

Sun. 6th
Edith + Clarence went to Salem. Dull + threating rain. Snowed in the night + the ground is white. Audrea + I had a nice quiet day. Audrea very good + thoughtful. Folks got home about ten o’clock. Edith brought home Mrs. Parkers coat. Fred was very thoughtful to give it to her. She needed it. She took down some things in the line of food. poor Lu cant cook much. It does seem as if it was those who are most needed who are taken. Did not storm after all. found the family somewhat more cheerful. Tho’ they have been wonderful considering what a great loss they have had. Mattie was a wonderful woman
