January 12, 1927: “saucy”

Wednesday 12. A bright beautiful day not very cold. My back aches badly today, but I went my usual round, washed dishes, made beds, dry mopped the bedrooms, ironed + sewed a little. Audrea saucy to me tonight because I was afraid her feet were wet. It makes me feel badly to have her do so, but I told her I would write it down here whenever she spoke in that way. Mrs. Baldwin sent word she might be over tonight. Had a letter from Lu says will come Friday if well enough is threatened with grippe.

Sorry I was slow to get all the contextual info in today. The 12th is my birthday, and I had festivities to attend!

Notes + Explanations:

Well, I’d love to have Annie come do her “usual round” at my house!

It’s funny that she is aware of the historic value of her diaries, to the point where she uses the record of Audrey’s behavior as a disciplinary device.

Her Canadian roots are evident in the use if “grippe” instead of flu. I wonder how common that vocabulary was in Boston, or if she imported it with her. It’s originally from French.

Edith might have thought Annie as Persnickety? Fussy? Annie is feeling misunderstood, unappreciated perhaps? Happy Birthday!! I’m just betting you have some twists and turns yet to come…….

The martyr mentality is a pervading one on that side of my family, I must say. It makes it all the funnier to read for me, because I can almost hear my Nanna (Audrey) saying some of these things too.

Wait until you see what she says on the 13th… posting it now!
